Cozy and rustic, but with a modern twist, Ardo has a romantic feel thanks to the dim lighting and flicker light from candles and oil lamps. There were families, young couples and groups of friends all packed into this small restaurant, enjoying themselves immensely. Ardo makes excellent use of the space (long and narrow) including a beautiful bar and exposed kitchen.
Our waitress was very sweet and helpful with the menu. When I asked her to help me choose between two dinner options, she gladly and confidently pointed me in the right direction. I was very pleased with the advice. She was very fast and also and still managed to always fill our glasses as soon as they were empty. Made me feel well attended to.
I ordered the Sicilian Margherita, which had a very interesting twist. On the outside, instead of a salt rim, it seemed to have a salty coffee flavour, so I believe ground coffee was used. Excellent cocktail and I loved the glass it was served in.
We were served some homemade sourdough bread. It was dense, but still very soft and had a great flavour and texture (nice crust on the outside). It was served with a high quality olive oil. You could really taste the delicious olive flavour.
We also ordered a plate of mixed olives with pickled vegetable and the burrata. The olives and veg were delicious with a great hit of acid and spice on the veg. The burrata was a favourite for both my husband and me and reminded us of a caprese salad. The cheese was extremely creamy on the inside and oozed as soon we sliced into it. My only critique would be that the peaches could have been a little sweeter. They were a bit lacking, but still a very nice touch. Would definitely order this dish again.
Despite having had some bad experiences with truffles in the past, I decided to give Ardo’s dish a shot. The handmade gnocchi with stracchino cheese, small diced carrots and mushrooms were topped with beautiful shavings of black truffle. I LOVED that they did a little pan fry on the gnocchi and the sauce was a perfect amount. Gnocchi is so heavy to begin with that when it is drenched in a rich creamy sauce, I find I get sick of the flavour quicker and I don’t get to enjoy the taste of the gnocchi as much. This dish had a great balance of taste, texture and portion. Would order it again for sure.
My husband and I shared a gelato and chose mix berry and stracciatella as our flavours. It was good, but not the best gelato I have ever had. Still enjoyable and the mini meringues were a nice touch.
There were a few options to choose from for mains and starters, but not an abundance. Decent amount of choices for vegetarians I would conclude. Would like to try one of their vegetarian friendly pizzas next time.
Dinner for the two of us was about $50 per person. I felt like this was pretty reasonable considering we each got a drink, had 2 appetizers, a main each and shared a dessert. The quality of the food was top notch!
