Arepa Cafe offers casual dining with the ability to bring the outdoors in with a window wall that can be opened on hot summer days. With its industrial modern decor and bright colours, it is the perfect spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner. Good for an easygoing date or fun day/night out with friends or the family.
As I got take out, I can’t comment to much on service. My food was ordered and prepared pretty quickly and the staff were all friendly. So my overall impression was fast service with a smile!
Before I go into the meal itself, it is probably necessary to explain what exactly an Arepa is all about. Like a cross between a taco and a pita, it is a gluten free cornmeal sandwich that is handmade at their location and is inspired by Venezuelan cuisine. While it is a bit grainy in texture, it still holds together very well making it the perfect vessel for the loads of ingredients inside. I ended up choosing for myself the Pabellon Veggie Arepa which had avocado, black beans, sweet plantain and mozzarella cheese. They were extremely generous on the portions as the ingredients were bursting out. There are also 3 dips and a small coleslaw that comes with the meal as well. While I am not 100% sure on what the dips are exactly, I can say that the white one seems to be a garlic/herb mayo, the green is a medium spicy sauce (similar to a salsa verde) and the yellow sauce is HOT HOT HOT (taster beware). Also this sandwich is a bit messy to handle for the inexperienced.
Not only is this vegetarian friendly, but it seems to be gluten free friendly as well! There is an entire section on the Arepa menu dedicated to vegetarian fare so lots to choose from.
While Arepa Cafe is extremely generous with portions, the price is not what I would call cheap. My sandwich (which did include the dipping sauces and coleslaw) was $10.50. Not a crazy amount and for the quality and amount of food, but not something I would be able to indulge in on a daily basis.
