We were extremely lucky to have the private booth in the other half of Blow Fish as it allowed for a much more intimate evening with our group of friends (almost felt like the restaurant was all to ourselves). The restaurant has 2 sections and our dining spot was originally an alleyway. A great use of challenging Toronto space. At either end of the alleyway section, separated by a large bar, there is a couch-like seating area surrounding a low table. It was the perfect spot for me and 4 other dining partners to relax and easily chat without having to yell over loud music or other patrons.
The service was ok. Nothing memorable or special, but a solid experience nonetheless. Initially, one of the dishes I ordered was forgotten, but it wasn’t an issue as we were doing another round of dishes anyway.
We ordered a few dishes to share among our group. Unfortunately I was the only vegetarian so my options were limited. The first dish I had was the Crispy Tofu which had tofu fried with mushrooms, zucchini and asian eggplant tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce. It was presented beautifully and extremely flavourful. It had all the meat eaters going for seconds.
Next was the Lentil Mash on Crispy Rice. This was a really unique dish both in terms of flavour combination and texture. I loved the bit of heat balanced out by the sweetness from the caramelized onions and the rice served crispy was a perfect vessel for the lentils. It would not have worked if the rice was soft. Again a beautiful presentation.
The menu was fairly limited with respect to the vegetarian options (around 4-5 in total), but I will say that what they do have for vegetarians is really good and also interesting!
Unfortunately this restaurant is not an inexpensive night out. The dishes will run you $12-$18 and you will need a few of them to fill you up (I would say the sizing is on the tapa-style side). The quality and presentation, however, were excellent.
