Vegetable Soon Tofu
Hot Pot Rice
It is often the most unassuming restaurants that tend to have the best food and Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is a perfect example of this. Don’t judge this Koreatown gem on its looks. You won’t want to pass it up!
Ok, this is not the prettiest restaurant I have ever eaten in, but it definitely is not the worst either. Small (a bit cramped) and no real theme other than “restaurant”, Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is unassuming, basic and a bit chaotic. But what it lacks in decor, it more than makes up in great prices and taste! Good for a meal with the family, friends or long time partner.
I have to say that the service was very quick here (always great when you are very hungry), but there was also a lack of attention. Almost immediately after we ordered a few dishes were smacked down on the table with no explanation of what they were or where they came from. Turns out they are free apps with every meal and can be replenished on request. The rice with our meals was served in stacked stone bowls, which for some reason were left on the table, leaving us even less room to eat. It would have been better to have them taken away as soon as they were finished. Based on the price and overall look, I wasn’t expecting Michelin star quality service so I was not too bothered and, again, the super quick service for taking orders and dishing out food was a big plus.
The drink menu was very limited, but they do have a few beers and soju (a Korean liquor) along with pop. They also have water bottle containers on the table for you to refill your glass.
As mentioned, we had a few free appetizers hit our table immediately after ordering. The Miso soup was only included with one of the meals and the eggs were for those who ordered the hot pot stew (raw), but the rest of the apps were up for grabs! Everything was flavourful and it was great to munch on something as we waited for the main event. My favourite was probably the soy beans that were covered in a sweet sauce.
This menu literally has 9 options on it, so if you have an indecisive diner in your life, he or she might enjoy coming to a place where the choices don’t feel overwhelming. As there was only one vegetarian dish on the menu, I had to go with that. To my delight, the Vegetable Soon Tofu stew plus Hot Stone Pot Rice was incredibly flavourful and delicious. The tofu was melt in your mouth and the broth was swimming with vegetables. The rice (perfectly cooked) made a perfect base as I scooped spoonfuls of the stew onto the grains. I ordered my dish ‘regular spicy’, but I quickly realized I could have gone to the extra spicy level. I never really had anything quite like this meal and will 100% be back again!
Well considering there is only one vegetarian option on the menu, not really. (I suppose you could argue that 11% of the menu is vegetarian as there were only 9 options, but that’s probably a stretch). The vegetarian item, however, was a real treat for me and perhaps for other vegetarians as well. I enjoyed my meal immensely!
Aside from the phenomenal tasting food, the other great thing about this place is the price. My meal was $8.95+tax, which was more than worth it! My husband of course went with the most expensive dish on the menu which was $11.95+tax and we each ended up having a beer. So total for the two of us we paid around $40. Incredibly well priced in my opinion.
