Looking for a fun atmosphere, margaritas galore and delicious Mexican cuisine? Well El Local Loco is delivering just that at their new restaurant in Toronto.
El Local Loco delivers a sultry, energetic vibe with dim lighting, festive art on the wall, cactus plants adorning most tables and a fantastic bar that screams come and enjoy me. The tables are well spaced out and there are even a few booths along the outside wall (my friend and I were lucky to get one of the comfy booths to ourselves). The ambiance created here definitely speaks to a fun downtown crowd and it is sure to make a perfect spot for a girls (or boys) dinner out with a big group of friends or even a date night. I think during the day it would be family friendly too.
We were greeted at the door, brought to our booth right away and immediately served water (bottle left on the table which I really like). Our waiter was very friendly, helpful and clearly knowledgeable about the menu and cocktail list. Food came out quickly and he checked in with us to make sure we had everything we needed. Overall very solid service.
My friend and I decided to order a few appetizers to share and go lighter on the main. First on the table was the Guacamole. It was overflowing with fresh ingredients and had both great texture (a bit chunky) and taste. There weren’t a ton of chips brought out initially, but our waiter happily delivered more upon request. Absolutely would order this again.
Then the Ensalada de Frojoles (Bean Salad) and Aguacate Crujiente (Crispy Avocado). The Bean Salad was a large portion and very fresh. I loved the addition of the peanuts as it gave a great crunch to an otherwise soft dish. I loved the Crispy Avocado and, again, the portion size was substantial. Essentially a whole avocado (cut in half and pit removed) covered in what I believe was a seasoned breadcrumb and lightly fried. If you are a die-hard avocado fan, then this is a good dish for you.
As mentioned above, we filled up on lots of apps and ordered a taco each for our main. As there weren’t many vegetarian options to choose from, I decided to go with the Calabacin Crujiente (Crispy Zucchini). The taco had a ton of filling inside making it a bit challenging to eat, but was fresh and flavourful. I am personally not a big fan of corn tortillas so I do wish there was an option to choose a flour tortilla instead, but aside from that, I really did enjoy it.
My friend decided to get the Cola de Langosta (Whole Lobster Tail) and she, too, really enjoyed the flavours and was extremely impressed with how much lobster she actually got. For a tiny taco, it sure did pack in the filling.
I would say the restaurant is vegetarian friendly to a point. There were lots of apps for me to choose from that could easily make up a meal, but when it came to the main course, the pickings were slim (I pretty much had one taco option and one burrito option). A couple of other options would be appreciated.
Price was fairly decent. I had 2 traditional margaritas, shared 3 apps and enjoyed a “main” (the 1 taco) and paid approx $50 after tax and tip. I thought some of the appetizers were a little steep, but you can tell the quality of ingredients was fresh and portions were generous so the value was there.
