Small and often packed full of hungry customers, Fresh on Spadina offers a very casual dining atmosphere. In the summer they have a great little patio that you can sit out on, otherwise you will have to hopefully find seating inside. The place itself is very long and narrow so finding a table for larger groups can be tricky. Its brightly decorated and simplistic on the design. Best for small groups, a casual date or dinner with a friend.
Be forewarned that most of the time you have to wait for seating as this restaurant is not only very popular, but tight on space (although they maximize as best they can). The servers do their best to get you in and out as quick as possible, to make sure the tables are made available for the next patron. They don’t rush you, but you can feel their efficiency. I find the service is generally friendly, but nothing over the top outstanding. They serve you with a smile, help answer any questions and get the food to you pretty quick.
As the weather is changing, I decided to start my meal off with a warm cup of soup. They have 2 daily soups to choose from (different at each location) so I went with the Potato & Leek with Rosemary. It was a semi-pureed soup with a few large chunks left in it. Very flavourful and not to heavy (don’t think they used cream or milk). My friend who I was dining with let me share her cornbread with her, which I loved! It had a great texture to it (little crispy on the outside from the grill) and the flax hummus was delicious! I would definitely order both appetizers again.
For my main I decided to have the Macro Green (veg only) Fresh Bowl with Miso Gravy for the sauce and added goat cheese and crispy tofu cubes. In a nutshell this dish is essentially a giant bowl of delicious steamed vegetables including: bean sprouts, broccoli, bok choy, kale and grilled sweet potato. The miso gravy takes it to the next level as it is rich and almost “cheesy” in flavour. I love the fresh goat cheese (I try my best to get on every bite) and the crispy tofu cubes are like the icing on the cake…my absolute favourite!! It is my ultimate healthy meal and something I would highly recommend to any friend or family member who is a lover of veg like I am.
My friend decided to get the Seasonal Pie Square for dessert (apple that day) and was kind enough to share. We were both a bit skeptical when we heard that it wasn’t served warm, but the waitress insisted it was very good. Turns out she wasn’t lying and I enjoyed it immensely. It reminded me less of a pie and more of an apple crisp. It tasted of brown sugar, butter (not even sure if they used this or not as it might have been vegan) and a hint of cinnamon…my favourite fall combination! It was fairly small in size, but after such a big meal it ended up being the perfect amount to share. Will order it again.
This is literally a vegetarian restaurant so it sure is vegetarian friendly! I love coming here as I never have to ask questions about the ingredients on the menu and even the most hardcore meat-eater enjoys a meal here as they offer a great variety of amazing dishes. They are also vegan and gluten-free friendly as well!
So Fresh is not the cheapest restaurant, but considering the portions and quality of ingredients I feel that it is a fair price. Since the menu is so extensive, you can really make it as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. For the two of us our meal came to $50 (she had a cup of soup and a small Green Goddess Bowl)
