Cozy and charming would be the best way to describe House on Parliament. Taking over an old Toronto Victorian building, it has kept the structure and transformed it into a beautiful and romantic spot to grab a bite. The lights are dim and the tables are close together (bit of a tight squeeze), but it all contributes to its desired cozy atmosphere. You feel like you are walking into a home where you might bump into close family and friends (which I am sure many do). Perfect for dinner out with friends or a romantic evening with your partner. I would say during the day it’s good for families, but at night, it’s probably a good idea to leave the kids at home.
Our waiter was friendly and helpful. He helped my friend and I navigate the menu and tried to be present but not invasive. Not much else to say. Good service, nothing crazy special. Had a very pleasant time.
We ordered a 1/2 liter of white wine to share. It came out quickly and was a good Italian Pinot Grigio. I would definitely order it again (Pinot Grigio, La Delizia, Friuli, Italy ’15).
There were limited vegetarian options, but I was excited to give the Veggie Burger a go. I was able to order a side of 1/2 fries and 1/2 salad (perfect balance and thrilled I had this option). The burger was very large and had a very generous portion of hummus on top (pretty unique topping) and they added a slice of swiss cheese at my request. The salad was fresh and colourful and the fries were plentiful and crispy. Overall delicious and a very large portion. I would definitely order this again.
I don’t typically order dessert, but my friend and I decided to share a Sea Salted Caramel Chevre Cheesecake and boy were we happy we did! It came in a very large mason jar, which presented nicely and the helping of caramel on top was thick and incredibly tasty. It was more than enough for the two of us, delicious and a worthwhile indulgence.
I would say they are ok as far as vegetarian friendly goes, but not great. There is more than one option for mains, a few salads and a couple of sides to choose from. Don’t expect to have a wide variety of options, but there are some.
For the two of us, the bill came to around $50 a person (this included 1/2L of wine, a main each and a shared dessert) so definitely on the pricier side. The portions of the food, however, are very large so I felt like I got good bang for my buck.
