Ube Nut Ice Cream
iHalo Krunch is serving up this year’s hottest, cool summer treat with the all-too-Instagram-able charcoal ice cream. So head down to Trinity Bellwoods Park and get your iphones ready as this black ice cream not only looks amazing, but tastes great too!
iHalo Krunch is small and minimalist, but hey, they only serve one thing so who cares? Right across from Trinity Bellwoods Park (perfect location as you can enjoy your ice cream there), it is easily spotted on the street as there is typically a long line up out the door. Inside they have white walls, industrial geometric-inspired lighting and a wicked abstract painting that captures a lot of the colours in their very trendy ice cream. It is a tight space (probably can only fit about 7 people inside), but luckily service is pretty quick.
With long lines, the key of this place is to get customers orders and get them out. So not a lot of time for chit chat, but that is ok with me as all I am really after is sinking my teeth into the delicious frozen treat. They are pretty speedy so even starting in line outside the door, I only waited around 5-10 minutes. It was pretty amusing watching the customer flow at the counter which goes like this:
- Customer asks what everything tastes like
- Server 1 responds
- Customer chooses and moves to side
- Server 2 makes Ice Cream and hands it to customer
- Customer takes photo on phone (every time!)
- Customer walks out door eating ice cream
Toronto’s latest food craze restaurant does one thing and it does one thing well…it serves up soft serve ice cream. Ok there is actually some Gelato and Sorbet options to pick from too, but lets be honest, no one is ordering that right now when charcoal ice cream is on the menu. Taking inspiration from Asia, the menu for soft serve includes Ube Haze (apparently an asian yam that has a slight vanilla flavour to it…purple), Black on Black (charcoal ice cream with a hint of coconut flavour…black), Ube Nut (mix of the ube and black ice cream…black/purple), Meet Your Matcha (matcha flavoured…green), Bean There Done That (vanilla…white), Matcha Bean (mix of matcha and vanilla…green/white).
Clearly the flavour that steals the show is the black charcoal ice cream, which is truly black and not simply a light grey. While this may seem new to us Canadians, charcoal ice cream had already become quite famous in the US. Thanks to iHalo however, Torontonians finally have their chance to take a lick at it on their own turf. I ended up choosing the Ube Nut in the charcoal cone. A few friends asked me what it tasted like (many thinking it was licorice), but I found it hard to describe. Really it tasted of a hint of vanilla and coconut and just really really really good soft serve. Frankly, it was probably the best soft serve I have ever had. The homemade charcoal cone is also delicious. And an added bonus…they put a scoop of marshmallow fluff at the bottom of the cone to reduce melted ice cream from dripping out the other end. Clever!
If you eat ice cream you can eat here! And no worries about the marshmallow fluff as it doesn’t seem to contain gelatin (read the ingredients on the tub and couldn’t find gelatin).
Not the cheapest treat, but for an occasional fun dessert I didn’t mind paying the $6.50 price. And the portions are really big (couldn’t finish mine).
