Ward’s Island is one of my favourite summer spots in Toronto. Unlike Center Island, Ward’s is far less crowded (not nearly as many kids) and offers a wonderfully relaxed cottage atmosphere with an incredible view of the city. It’s only a short ferry ride away (or you can take a water taxi) and the perfect place to run off to on a nice sunny day. The Island Cafe really envelops the beauty of the island. It is all outdoors and offers a mishmash of tables in a multitude of colours, bud vases with all different flowers and foliage from the island and umbrellas to keep it a bit shady for some. Really bohemian island style! My husband and I went for our anniversary and it was the perfect romantic meal.
In the summer it is pretty busy so don’t expect a fast meal, however the staff there are very friendly and do a great job on checking up on you. Just think island time and you will be fine 🙂
I decided to try one of their cocktails and asked the waitress for her advice. I ended up choosing the La Tajina, which was a tequila based drink with pineapple, agave and jalapeno. Boy you could feel that hit of jalapeno spice when you take your first sip. I really enjoyed it, but you do have to be a lover of both tequila and spice to appreciate this. They have many other fun cocktails on their menu so be sure to check them out.
We decided to share the Mezze platter to start. You can choose either 3, 5 or 7 options from a list for the platter and it is served with flatbread. We picked the hummus, baba ganoush and pickled beets & turnips. All 3 were delicious (I am quite confident the hummus and baba ganoush were homemade) and the bread was nicely toasted. My only complaint is that we received very little bread for the amount of dips. Extra bread was $3, which we didn’t feel was worth it.
I love a good burrito and the Island Cafe has a GOOD burrito. Jam packed with refried beans, tofu, veg and cheese and served with a side of salsa and salad, it was a perfect meal for me. Everything was flavourful, decent portions and fresh food. They make a point to buy from local farmers and you can really taste the quality of ingredients in every bite. Looking forward to going back and ordering this again!
There are definitely enough options for a vegetarian to choose from and they even have a vegan burger. Plenty to choose from for the whole family.
I would call this a mid-price point restaurant. It is not expensive, but also not the cheapest place I have been too. With a beer, cocktail, shared app and 2 mains (my husband got the fish and chips) we ended up at around $60, which felt more than fair.
