Right in the heart of downtown Montreal, Juliette & Chocolat is a perfect way to enjoy a delicious, casual meal or a great spot to read a book and enjoy a few treats. With a large open concept space, this restaurant offers multiple options for seating including bar, large dining tables, smaller tables and even couches/cushiony chairs for the ultimate casual dining experience. Brightly light and minimalist in terms of its decor, it is a perfect spot for dining with friends, family or even solo.
I loved how all the staff were wearing “chocolatier” uniforms, complete with hat and apron. Really got you in the spirit of chocolate and dessert! My waiter was very polite and spoke excellent English. He also was very helpful when it came to choosing a vegetarian main and a dessert. He spent lots of time going through the menu and clearly knew it very well. My only complaint was the service was a bit slow at times (but in all fairness they were quite busy) and I wish they took AMEX as that is what I use for a company card. I didn’t get the dessert which was suppose to come with my meal and, instead, ordered a dessert off the menu – it would have been a bit much to have two.
With my meal (which was a combo) I got my choice of tea or coffee and with my dessert came a small cup of their hot chocolate. The tea I chose was green and tropical, which they put the two bags in the cup together. Interesting and refreshing flavour combination that I normally would not have tried. I also liked how I was brought a small tea pot for the hot water. This allowed me to refill myself as needed and kept the tea warm at all times.
As for the hot chocolate that came with dessert…all I can say is INCREDIBLE! It was so smooth, rich, creamy and delightfully chocolaty. They give you different options on what type of chocolate you can choose for your drink (I chose classic milk chocolate). Lucky for me they sell their cocoa at their store in the restaurant, so I made sure to buy myself a can to make at home. It was probably the best hot chocolate I have ever had in my life! I would probably end up at Juliette & Chocolat once a week for the hot chocolate if I lived in Montreal.
As this restaurant is mostly about dessert, they have a seemingly basic menu for the savory options…crepes or salad (although they are anything but basic with their flavour combinations). With the help of my waiter, I ended up choosing the Autumn Galette combo which included a buckwheat crepe covered with roasted squash, feta cheese, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds and honey drizzled over top (plus I added spinach). A small salad of greens and dressing was served on the side. The textures and flavours of the crepe were great and overall it was a very seasonal meal that filled me right up. The buckwheat crepe was slightly bitter, but the sweetness from the honey, cranberries and even squash balanced it out. They were very generous on the portions of toppings.
What could be more perfect than the Chocolat Gourmand Tasting plate…especially when chocolate is their specialty! This dish offered mini versions of some of their most popular dessert offerings including: a mini version of their delicious hot chocolate (whipped cream on the side), a small chocolate lava cake, a bite sized fleur de sel brownie and finally a petite raspberry cheesecake. Honestly everything tasted so good I can’t really decide which was my favourite. It was the perfect sized potions to get a proper taste of everything and didn’t leave me feeling ill from too much chocolate (is that even possible?). I am glad that the cheesecake was included as the tartness from that balanced the sweetness from everything else well. A great end to a great meal.
I also decided to bring home a treat for my husband and I to enjoy later, so I chose 2 of their truffles (coconut milk and peanut butter and jelly) and a can of their hot chocolate powder. Luckily they have a store online that you can order from as well. Both truffles were delicious 😀
Plenty to chose from as a vegetarian, even with such a limited menu. And if you are a chocoholic…this is a dangerous place to be!
All very reasonably priced considering the portions and quality of food. Not an overly expensive meal and they have some great combos and seasonal specials as well. The hot chocolate might seem a bit pricey, but trust me when I say it is 100% worth it!
