Bubble Tea Smoothie
Mango & Rose Flavour
Labothéry Restaurant offers customers a real hands on experience in building some delicious bubble tea drinks with a unique twist of a laboratory setting.
Stark like a laboratory, Labothéry attempts to capture the “science” behind a bubble tea drink to create a unique experience. Don’t be surprised if you encounter a long line, as the process to create your drink is one that requires a lot of thought. And while there is seating available, it is limited so perhaps plan on taking your drink with you on a walk just in case there are no spots left. Armed with syringes, petri dishes and stainless steel trays, you will feel like a chemist in no time in this lively, fun atmosphere. Perfect for a fun day out with friends, a casual day date or some time with the family.
Probably my only complaint was the confusion over what to put in what type of drinks. There are a lot of signs to help figure out how to build the drink which is very dependent on whether you are choosing hot or cold, powder or syrup, etc. And, there are friendly staff behind the counter who try to help you along the way, but I found that the staff at the start of the process, the signs, and the staff at the end of the process all seemed to have a different take on what to do. In the end, my friend and I managed to get a delicious drink, but it was a fairly lengthy and confusing process to get through. I’m hoping the restaurant can make a few tweaks to ensure that everyone (including the signs) are on the same page.
Step 1: The first step involves picking either a hot or cold drink. I love getting bubble tea slushies so there was no question in my mind about picking a cold fresh tea. Then I got to choose my syrup flavour (2 for cold drinks). I decided on Rose and Mango. Rose was considered a fan favourite on a few social media channels so I wanted to see what all the hype was about. It actually added a beautiful flavour to the sweet mango.
Step 2: Next we got to choose the sweetness level which, when using syrups, you don’t really need to enhance. My friend, however, was building a different drink and chose about 10ml of maple syrup for her drink. [The sweeteners came in different quantities and different styles of sweet enhancers]. I grabbed a milk as well as I thought one of the signs recommended it for my drink, but upon reaching the end of the line I was told I probably shouldn’t add it.
Step 3: The last step was selecting the bubbles/jellies/pearls which give Bubble Tea it’s “bubble” aura. One type of bubble came with my drink, but I decided to add 2 more flavours (just a small fee extra) – mango and honey. The honey was something I have never seen and was soooo delicious! Little pops of honey in my mouth, I wish I could have these at home.
After handing the girl at the cash my finished tray and making some minor adjustments (aka milk went back) we paid and waited for our drinks to be called. Like Starbucks, they write your name on the cup to identify whose is whose. The fun twist…they throw Dr. in front (probably the only time I will be called a Dr. and the first time for my friend who is currently getting her PhD). It was a great way to tie up the fun laboratory experience!
The end product was also delicious! On a hot summer day I can see this being the perfect place to cool down with something customized to your taste. Or in the winter, you can always go for a hot tea to warm yourself up.
Absolutely. Really no meat in sight so very vegetarian friendly indeed.
I believe after tax it came to around $8 for the drink, which is not cheap, but also didn’t feel too expensive considering the size of the drink the multiple delicious flavours and, of course, the fun experience. It was also extremely filling and thoroughly enjoyed by both of us.
