Miso Soup & Salad
Tempura Vege Roll
If you are looking for unique and delicious sushi in the Dieppe, New Brunswick (Canada) area, then Sugar Roll Japanese Cuisine is a great choice. Make sure you check out their Tempura Vege Roll.
A bit of a mish-mash of design elements, Sugar Roll still manages to offer a clean, bright and modern space. It feels that the restaurant tries to have Japanese, rustic and modern all wrapped into one motif that can come off a bit odd at first. A painting of the city of Paris and a London double decker bus had me raising an eyebrow or two, but I still felt relaxed all the same. With plenty of space, this restaurant seems good for casual date night, family meal or a dinner out with friends.
Considering there was only one waitress and one sushi chef (female too which I don’t see too often and was thrilled to find here), the service was pretty quick. The waitress was friendly and willing to chat if you gave her a cue; otherwise she let you enjoy the meal.
Apparently everything comes with miso soup and salad, even if you order separate rolls and no combo of any kind. Salad was ok…pretty basic and small. Miso soup was also just ok and on the smaller side. But considering they were complimentary, I am really not complaining!
For the main, I decided to order the Avocado Roll and the Tempura Vege Roll. While the Avocado Roll was pretty standard (although admittedly generous on the size of avocado), the Tempura Vege Roll was not at all what I expected. I figured it would be a few pieces of tempura vegetables inside, but Sugar Roll took it a step further and did a beautiful tempura batter on the outside of the sushi giving it a marvelous crunch. It was a great way to add texture and flavour, and lets be honest, everything tastes better fried. Very good, but be warned, it is a very large roll. Two bites for sure for each piece and I could have just had that and forgone the avocado roll. Very unique and I would recommend giving it a shot if you dine here.
Most definitely. They indicate all vegetarian options with a V (always very helpful) and there was plenty to choose from off the menu. They also indicate which are gluten free meals as well.
I got the two rolls, complimentary soup and salad and a glass of house wine (very generous pour) and paid around $33. It was not the cheapest, but I was full and satisfied.
