Soup of the Day (Vegan Thai)
Mac N’ Cheese
Taylors Landing promises to deliver plenty of menu options to choose from – including a small plates section – in a modern industrial setting, conveniently located at Shops at Don Mills, Toronto.
Modern industrial design is clearly what Taylors Landing is all about. Plenty of booth space, lots of large tables and a ton of natural light, this restaurant boasts the perfect venue for virtually all occasions (date night, dinner with friends, work outing, family, etc). Open and spacious and lots of lighting throughout, Taylors Landing did a great job in transforming what was once a PF Changs into a sophisticated trendy spot.
Considering there were very few people when our group arrived at lunch, the service was a little slow. We were, however, greeted at the door, offered our choice in seating and all of our questions about the menu were promptly answered. Overall decent service. Nothing special, but nothing really bad either.
As the Soup of the Day was vegan, I decided to get a bowl as a starter. Not something I would give top marks on for presentation, but the soup itself was good, not special. It was slightly chunky and had good flavours, but lacked some heat and was a bit on the thin side. I think some coconut milk and red chilies would have done wonders to this Vegan Thai soup.
I ordered the Veggie Taco and my mom got the Mac N’ Cheese (which I ended up eating about a third of). The taco had roasted squash, quinoa, black beans and charred corn topped with some cheese and a lime & avocado crema. I found the veggies inside to be dry with little flavour. The toppings definitely helped. I liked that it was on a flour tortilla as well. Overall it was good, not great. As my father sometimes says “it’s food”.
I really enjoyed my mom’s Mac N’ Cheese (small plate). The cheesy flavour was very much present (I hate when a mac n’ cheese is bland) and it was nicely baked as well. My mom said she didn’t enjoy it that much as the texture of the sauce was not as creamy as it should have been (didn’t have that ooey gooey feel). My dad had a Brisket Mac N’ Cheese (small plate) which consisted of a layer of the same mac n cheese topped with a thin layer of smoked brisket. He liked the brisket which he said tasted like bacon – very smokey – but also thought the mac n’ cheese part was just ok.
There were quite a number of options to choose from for vegetarians on the menu and many were indicated by a little vegetarian symbol (always appreciate as it makes the decision making easier). I also liked how their soup of the day was vegan. Overall, a vegetarian friendly restaurant.
While the full Mains were on the pricier side, the Small Plates section of the menu was more reasonably priced, but keep in mind that there is nothing else on the plate apart from the main event. Personally, I thought the small plate portions were filling enough, but bigger eaters may not agree. In that case, I think ordering a a couple of small plates or a small plate with a soup or salad is really the way to go here.
