P. A McMurray (oyster shucker extraordinaire) dishes up not only traditional pub fare, but also an eclectic and lively atmosphere that is all too inviting. Between the beautiful 19th century building, extra large patio, friendly service, Irish tunes and delicious food, it is no wonder why The Céili Cottage Restaurant is a local favourite of Leslieville.
Surrounded by a white picket fence, the beautiful 1880s building stands proud among the old landmarks of Leslieville, Toronto. The inside screams pub and can best be described as “kooky” – perfect for this Kook – with its interesting/eclectic decor (yup there is a Christmas tree on the ceiling covered in Easter decorations). Meaning to create a fun and creative atmosphere, the The Céili Cottage achieved just that. I particularly enjoyed the many pictures of travels, experiences and chef achievements adorning the walls. While it was a bit cold that evening, I can see the extra large patio being a big hit in the summer. Great place for a relaxed date or night out with a group of friends.
Our waitress was friendly, attentive and helpful with our menu. With quite a few tables to look after, she did get a bit busy, but the staff there seem to have each others backs and another waiter brought over our bill promptly when we asked.
I decided to order a cocktail and the waitress recommended the pomegranate & vodka drink (after I advised her that I don’t typically drink much liquor). I loved the bright pink colour as it put me in the mood for summer and was very easy to drink just as our waitress suggested. The restaurant is definitely generous on the alcohol pour 🙂
Curries are VERY different depending on what type of restaurant you go to. As this was an Irish pub I was very happy to receive a more “UK” style curry as opposed to a Thai curry (I never really love when a restaurant tries to do all different types of cuisine under one roof). Now curry is not the easiest food to capture on camera in an appetizing way so please don’t judge it by my photography skills. It was delicious and jam packed with flavour! It was served over a white sticky rice and my only complaint would be that I wish there was more. An excellent vegetarian offering indeed!
My husband likes to order meat typically when we go out as I cook mostly vegetarian at home, so he decided to go with the Steak and Cottage Kettle Chips. The steak came out a perfect medium rare and he described it as a melt in your mouth experience. The Kettle Chips were of course house made and added the perfect crunch to the meal. Again, the biggest complaint was “MORE PLEASE!”
I love a menu where it clearly indicates (or has a section) what is vegetarian and this restaurant delivered. Now granted, there weren’t a ton of options to choose from as a vegetarian, but there were enough different meal choices and so I was easily able to find something that suited my appetite. The Irish are known for their meat and potatoes after all!
The price was not cheap, but not too expensive either. Definitely excellent quality ingredients/food, but wish the portions were a bit larger.
