The best way I can describe the atmosphere at Wilbur Mexicana is casual, hipster at its finest! With an industrial, modern decor, open style kitchen and seat yourself motto, it is the perfect venue for a meal with friends, a fun date or some after work snacking with co-workers!
Unlike a fine dining restaurant, Wilbur Mexicana totes a serve yourself experience. You first grab a menu and line up at the counter to have your order taken. The girl was extremely pleasant and helpful at the register. I first was going to order a Fajita vegetarian style, but she quickly informed me it wouldn’t be worth the money. Instead she suggested I go with some of their vegetarian tacos, which I obliged. After placing your order you are given a table sign (cute graphics) and a server comes out to drop off your food at your table you chose. They were extremely quick despite how busy it was…literally the meal came out moments after we sat down.
As I was waiting in line to order my meal, I discovered an item on their menu that said “Wine 13oz Can”. I told my dining partner that if I wasn’t reading it wrong and they did in fact have wine in a can, then I would have to give it a try. Sure enough the waitress pulled out an ice cold can of wine to show me. I chose the Rosé, which was pretty good and enjoyed the novelty immensely!
While I didn’t have have the boxed water, I thought it was also pretty fun. They have quite the unique assortment of drinks here!
My friend and I decided to share the Chips, Guacamole and Queso Fundido (cheese sauce). Wow was that guac incredible (ton of great fresh flavours) and I can never say no to a good cheese sauce…and it was very good. I would happily order this again and again and maybe not even share next time. Very generous on the portions and fresh tasting.
I decided to go with two of their vegetarian tacos and was not disappointed. Between the appetizer and the main, I had more than enough to eat! The first taco was the Grilled Avocado on a Corn Tortilla (with pineapple salsa, chipotle crema and cotija). I have never had pineapple in a taco before, but the tart flavour went great with the creamy avocado. Lot of fresh, vibrant flavours. The second taco I got was the Mushroom on a flour tortilla (with peppers & onions, sweet potato crisps, cotija) and it ended up being my favourite. The potato crisps added great texture and the flour tortilla was more to my liking. Both were excellent and innovative options. They even have a salsa bar with many different sauces and salsas to add to your meal so I helped myself to a few varieties 🙂
Plenty of options to choose from and lots of creative dishes to be had, vegetarians can feel confident that they can get an amazing meal at Wilbur Mexicana and leave feeling satisfied and full!
With the can of wine, appetizer and 2 tacos, my meal came to $30. While not expensive, it is not cheap either. Without the wine it would have been far more reasonable, but honestly who passes up wine in a can!
